"The FDOT District One is evaluating widening the existing four lane divided US 27 to a six lane divided highway from the Highlands County line to north of SR 60 including the interchange at US 27 and SR 60. The proposed widening of US 27 in south Polk County is consistent with the Polk Transportation Planning Organization's (TPO) 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan as a cost affordable project.
The average traffic that travels this segment of US 27 ranges from 17,600 vehicles near US 98 to 29,000 vehicles near SR 60 each day. The volumes are predicted to increase to between 42,800 and 52,800 vehicles daily by 2040 according to the TPO model. US 27 is a regional freight corridor that is a vital link between Interstate 4 and Miami, carrying on average between 3,200 and 3,700 trucks per day, which is about 20 percent of the total daily traffic volume. Truck traffic is expected to increase significantly now that CSX Integrated Logistics Center (ILC) near Winter Haven is operational. In addition, expansion of regional distribution facilities located in the Frostproof Industrial Area Freight Activity Center is also expected to contribute to increased truck traffic on US 27."
